Deck: Evilswarm

Introduction

Evilswarms are one of the most popular decks of the current metagame, and are consistently placing at tier 1. The non-Xyz monsters of the archetype are dedicated to rapid Xyz Summons, and allow for anything multiple Normal Summons per turn ("Evilswarm Castor" & "Evilswarm Kerykeion") to easy Special Summoning ("Evilswarm Mandragora"). The Xyz monsters, though, focus heavily on drastically disrupting the opponent's gameplay, from Taking control of enemy monsters ("Evilswarm Bahamut") to becoming immune to your opponent's card effects ("Evilswarm Thanatos"). The archetype is supported by the second wave of "Infestation" cards.

However, the biggest weapon in the Evilswarm arsenal is by far "Evilswarm Ophion". According to the Duel Terminal storylines, this Xyz monster is the corrupted version of "Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier". It is, in effect, a slightly weaker version of Archlord Kristya, in that it prevents both players from Special Summoning Level 5 or higher monsters. This destroys most Fusion and Synchro decks' big plays. It also has an impressive 2550 ATK, and so is capable of surviving almost all Level 4 or lower monsters in battle. To top it all, it has the ability to detach an Xyz material to get any "Infestation" Spell/Trap card from your deck.

A common play is to use this effect to get "Infestation Pandemic", a Quick-Play Spell Card which prevents all "Lswarms" from being destroyed by card effects for the turn, making "Ophion" almost invincible. You can use this to get around an opponent's "Dark Hole".

So let's get real here ... You don't really need to use the other Evilswarm Xyz monsters at all, since "Ophion" can control the field in most situations. Depending on the build, you rarely need to include Evilswarm monsters whose effects aren't based on quick Summons to set up for Ophion. "Kerykeion", "Castor" and possibly "Mandragora" are probably the most useful in this case. In terms of Extra Deck cards, you definitely want 3 copies of "Ophion", and possibly a couple of other Evilswarm Xyz monsters, mainly "Bahamut" and "Thanatos". Besides this, include plenty of other Rank 4 Xyz monsters, such as "Number 39: Utopia" and "Vylon Disigma".

Evilswarm Control

This build focusses on having strict control over the opponent's gameplay even early on in the game. To do this, it needs to have quick access to its Xyz monsters, especially "Ophion". If it is capable of doing this, the deck should take on a lockdown approach to control; however, depending on the starting hand, you might not be able to accomplish this. To facilitate, try adding in a card or two which allow for stun tactics. The Evilswarms "Hraesvelg" and "Azzathoth" are perfect for this, since they can get rid of opponent's cards while you set up for "Ophion", and have high DEF to back up their Flip Effects.
