Introduction
Gladiator Beast is an archetype, first released to the TCG in the Gladiator's Assult set on 14 November 2007. There is no consistency in naming for the archetype's support cards, except for the "Beast's Battle" support cards. As the name suggests, they are animal versions of gladiators found in Ancient Rome; This is supported by their naming. The Gladiator Beasts are described as a toolbox deck, in that one can simply 'reach into' his/her deck to find the card that he/she needs to fit the current situation. Gladiator Beasts are capable of tagging out, that is to say that they can shuffle themselves into the deck while Special Summoning another to take their place. After this, the newly Summoned Beast usually gains an effect, such as destroying an opponent's monster ("Gladiator Beast Murmillo") or Spell/Trap ("Gladiator Beast Bestiari"), or an ATK/DEF gain ("Gladiator Beast Laquari" & "Gladiator Beast Hoplomus"). For this reason they can have strong and effective control over the field which can be changed simply by engaging in battle.
But the Gladiator Beasts can, and often do, pursue another wing of tactics: that is the use of their Fusion Monsters, which can be brought onto the field through Contact Fusion. This is a process where the Fusion monster almost has a built in "Polymerization", and so can be Special Summoned simply by removing the Fusion Materials from the field: in the case of Gladiator Beasts, this involves shuffling them into the deck. There are more rules to Contact Fusion, which can be found here. The most popular of these Fusion Monsters is "Gladiator Beast Gyzarus", a 2400 ATK monster which, when Special Summoned, lets you destroy up to 2 cards on the field. It also has the tagging out ability, like most Gladiator Beasts.
A Gladiator Beast deck is very Trap-heavy, and should run around 15 monsters, 17 tops. As a result, you may draw all Spell/Trap hands, which isn't ideal. For this reason, you should make sure that your Spell/Traps are generalised, rather than focussing on "Gladiator Beast" support. This ensures that you can cover your ground until you can get a monster in your hand. Three copies of "Gladiator Beast Gyzarus" is advised, but since its necessary Fusion Material, "Gladitor Beast Bestiari", is currently limited, you should focus on getting him into your hand as soon as possible. Since there is very little support for this purpose, deck thinning is your best option.
Gladiator Beast (Prisma Build)
This is the deck that I (GGNoRe) use IRL.Unfortunately, you cannot use substitute Fusion Material Monsters for Contact Fusion, but that doesn't stop you from using monsters who can change their name! "Elemental HERO Prisma" is perfect for this and, by adding in a couple of "Elemental HERO Stratos" or "A Hero Lives", can be easily searched. It also makes the monsters you send to the Graveyard to pay its cost more accessible. Because of this, there is a good combo in which you can clear the field, attack directly for 2400 and Summon a 3000 ATK wall who can negate Spells and Traps in the form of "Gladiator Beast Heraklinos".
